Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
