Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of his "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

International Reactions

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
