Administration officials disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

While Vought provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
