An individual profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other platform users also earned large payouts from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from elections to current affairs.

The industry faced scrutiny under the previous administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
